The young woman was paralyzed after an E. coli infection from a hamburger patty caused seizures and life-threatening illness.Meat companies and grocers are barred from selling ground beef tainted with the virulent strain of E. coli known as O157:H7, but a single hamburger patty is often made up of many meats and there is no federal law for grinders to test for the pathogen.
